Six inmates barricaded themselves in a cell Tuesday night, blocking the doorway with a mattress, allowing no one in or out. Clarke County Sheriff Todd Kemp said Wednesday the inmates were angry. The six were from two different gangs and in no way wanted to be in the same cell.
"We placed the individuals in there together, Vice Lord and Gangsta Disciple. That doesn't mean much to the public but it does to the jail," Kemp said.
Sheriff Kemp said he was able to make his way into the cell to speak to the inmates who simply wanted to be in different cells. He said the incident ended without violence.
"I told them basically what was going to happen. They came out one by one as our wishes or we were going to come in and take care of business," said Kemp.
The staff at the department does screen inmates, but Kemp said there are so many reasons to consider, from medical, race, religion, and the list goes on.
"We try to do that to keep a happy medium, because let's face it, we are dealing with some of the worst of our society," said the sheriff.
Kemp said because of the uprising, inmates aren't allowed to receive any items from outside the facility.
