A pickup truck struck a gasoline fuel truck at a service station, causing an explosion and fire yesterday morning that shut down part of U.S. Highway 280 in north Shelby County.

No one was injured in the six a.m. accident, but the traffic jam and detours are causing headaches.

But the 23-year-old driver of the pickup was arrested on DUI charges and was in Birmingham Jail on Saturday. Authorities would not release his name.

Authorities said the fuel tanker was servicing an Exxon station when it was struck by the pickup, which had tried to stop at a red light, then swerved into the tanker.

The highway was closed about a half-mile on either side of the accident. Officials from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management and EPA checked the scene to see if any fuel spilled into the nearby Cahaba River.

The Exxon manager is being credited for shutting off the pumps and preventing an even bigger fire.
