More than 80 members of the House of Representatives have signed a petition urging Gov. Haley Barbour to expand the current special session to address the reauthorization of the Department of Human Services.

Barbour has said that he will ask the Legislature to reauthorize DHS either in this special session or in another one before July 1, which is when the current reauthorization expires. The governor determines what can be addressed in special session.

Speaker Billy McCoy asked why call a second special session when the Legislature already is in special session to tackle the issues of providing more lawsuit protection and voter identification.

The session is set to resume Monday at noon at the state Capitol in Jackson.
