A fellow lawmaker says Speaker Billy McCoy was awake and talking to family members Thursday at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Rep. Randy Pierce said McCoy's family wants to thank people for their prayers as the speaker recovers from surgery. He has diverticulitis, an inflammation of the digestive system.
Earlier Thursday, House clerk Don Richardson said McCoy had been unconscious for a while, but it wasn't clear whether that was caused by medication.
UMC officials have said McCoy, 61, a Democrat from Rienzi, is in "serious but stable'' condition.
Longtime Rep. Charlie Capps, 79, of Cleveland was in good condition Thursday at UMC, where he's being treated for pneumonia.
