Welcome to Bob McBride's retirement paradise. He has a nice house on waterfront property and don't forget the Harley. According to McBride, this is all possible because he and his wife decided to move to Lauderdale County.

"It's wonderful here. Every day it's like going on vacation," McBride said.

After over thirty years in law enforcement, McBride moved from Oregon to Lauderdale County, as he says, to get more for his money.

McBride says he made his investment based on his belief that the area specifically will become a hot spot for retirees looking to move.

While living in Oregon, McBride said he saw people from across the West Coast looking for a better property deal in Oregon.

For now, this retiree will continue enjoying his favorite fishing spot in peace. That is, he says, until his secret gets out.

I was born in Mississippi.My folks moved to n.j. to find jobs when I was 11.I moved to Meridian in 1987.I brought my job with me (computers). I moved around alot when I was a kid so I wanted to set down roots for my kids.I lost my job because there wasn't enought business to support me in Meridian. I could not find a job in Meridian that paid enought to support my family.I found one in Jackson and drove to Jackson and back everyday,so my kids would have roots.my kids went to college and moved away to better jobs and pay and more things to do. SO MUCH FOR ROOTS. When I retire I won't be joining Bob at the lake.I'll be moving to be near my kids. The one thing good I can say for Meridian is they got a lot of stores...

Good thing ole Bob is retired.He wouldn't have a nice house on waterfront property if he had to find a job in Meridian ! My kids never came back from college.When I retire I'll be moving near them.It won't be long till Bob has the lake all to himself. WAKE UP MERIDIAN .............!

We wish Bob the best on his investments but I can't seem to get a reasonable flight to Meridian!!

I move there in 2005 I made it my retiree home my wife has retiree i will be retiree in 2008 I have 38 year in law enforcement in washington dc

I don"t understand why every one is so negative about the Meridian area. I have lived all around the US. and the grass is always greener on the other side. Meridian will never get better if we as a community don't stick together, and make it better. If we spent half the time tring to fix the problems in our area as we do complaining about it, it might get better around here.

Maybe instead of just presenting a retiree's view of how Meridian is great maybe you should talk to young people to find out why they want to leave. Maybe they could even present ideas on how to improve Meridian. Otherwise, you're presenting biased and one-sided news.

Well isn't this story odd? I used to live in Meridian but after I graduated from high school I moved to VA! To be honest I don't think anyone my age really likes it in Meridian, because there is really nothing to do!!! But it's okay if you are looking for a simple life!!!

I see that you have not posted my earlier comments. Why not? Does the truth hurt? Meridian will not become the paradise that is predicted because of urban blight, low wages, and black economic flight. You cannot sweep these problems under the rug--they are up in your face everyday when you ride through the inner city of Meridian and you have children who do not have summer jobs or adequate recreational facilities and who ride around with their music blasting for lack of anything productive to do.

Retirees may find "paradise" in the county but for sure they will not find it in the inner city of Meridian. New developments are being built on the outskirts of the city for those who can afford it--but the getto is not far off in the shadow of the Center for the Performing Arts, area hospitals and medical facilities, and the new firehouse. And, as soon as the youth in Meridian receive any kind of a decent education--they will be out of here because they will be unable to support their families. So I don't know who will be helping to maintain the retirees paradise--i.e picking up their trash, serving them meals in area restuarants, or emptying their bed pans at the hospital. Perhaps it'll be the people too poor to leave town for higher wages elsewhere and who work several jobs just to earn the wages that they should be able to make on one full-time job. Welcome to paradise!
