"He was a very good neighbor," said Willie Mae Gray, speaking of her longtime neighbor William Purvis, 70. He, along with 27 year old Christina Woods, were shot Thursday night at his residence.
Danny Faile, 33, of Clarke County, was identified by police as the gunman. Officials say he entered Purvis' home at 2226 Crabapple Drive and fired multiple shots.
"From what we have pieced together, (Purvis) went to the residence to speak to what was considered his goddaughter when Faile produced a handgun and shot both of them," said Dean Harper of the Meridian Police Department.
Woods was transported to Rush Hospital with wounds in the leg that were not thought to be life-threatening.
Purvis was taken to Anderson Hospital where he later died. Faile died at the residence from self-inflicted gunshot wounds, according to authorities.
The case remains under investigation. Police are awaiting a statement from Woods.
