People from all over the country were in Jackson this weekend to celebrate the life of Medgar Evers.

Saturday's event, held at the New Hope Baptist Church, kicked off a weekend dedicated to the civil rights leader. Evers was shot and killed out side his home on June 12th, 1964.

Well-known gospel singers, choirs, and speakers performed for the large crowd.

People traveled from Florida, California, and Illinois to attend. Organizers included Charles Evers, Medgar Evers brother, and Mayor Harvey Johnson.

The annual Medger Evers homecoming parade was held in Downtown Jackson on Sunday.

It wasn't until 1994 that a conviction was made in the Evers murder.
