Recently named to the position of president at East Mississippi Community College, Dr. Rick Young has some pretty big shoes to fill. Dr. Tommy Davis retires at the end of June. Dr. Young will take the reigns July 1. He said he plans to continue improving the college.
"I am very humbled to have the opportunity to follow behind someone like Dr. Davis, who has been so successful," said Young. "I will never replace him, but hopefully I will be able to carry on the successful things that he has started here at EMCC."
Young said the foundation to continue in a positive direction has been set and he is read to continue building upon it.
"There are two things that are essential for continued growth. First of all, we are on sound financial footing and he has also established the district as the fastest growing community college system not only in the state, but in the southeast part of the U.S. This gives us a good launch platform to go to the next level," Young said.
That next level, he said, will include searching for new grants, increasing community involvement and more cooperation with area businesses.
"We will be listening to our customers, both potential students as well as the people in this area and trying to adhere to the community college philosophy to serve the people in our district," he said.
One of Dr. Young's main objectives will include a continued focus on increasing student enrollment.
"We plan to be very active with the local schools and have more of a presence with our faculty and staff developing relationships with area counselors, to make them more aware of the opportunities EMCC has to offer them," Young said.
