Lauderdale County, Miss. The possible switch from dumpsters to residential pickup in Lauderdale County didn't come up at Monday's supervisors meeting, but it is likely to soon.

It all boils down to the supervisors KNOW that the majority of the county residents DO NOT want roadside pick-up. This is exactly why they will not let it go to a vote again. I live within 2 miles of the green boxes. There are times when garbage is littered across the road in that particular area, but it's minimal. The residents in our are do a good job of making sure that the trash is actually put inside the boxes. Do I actually think people would plunder through my garbage... YES. I have family member in other counties that deal with that problem on a weekly basis. They also have to deal with people dumping garbage in their yards b/c those people won't pay their own garbage fees. Also, if the garbage pick up is going to be like it is in Meridian... I want to know that I will not have to walk across the street to get my garbage can out of a ditch that the collector carelessly tossed it into on a daily basis. [ Report Abuse ] "36833699"

First, I dislike being told when I have to dispose of my trash and prefer the green boxes. Questions: Who pays for the container and how do I get one? How/when are fees collected? How does one get the full container to curbside (several hundred feet downhill) when one is physically challenged and lives alone? I'll bet they won't actually drive up my drive to get my trash! If it's left closer to the roadside (which looks bad), what about the risk of container theft and/or animals getting into it? What about "other" types of garbage, such as deer remains, or bulk quantities of magazines, newspapers and non-biodegradable items we all toss when housecleaning. Is there a County landfill where folks can take non-garbage items? Seems like roadside junk will increase if options aren't made available. I'm disappointed that more details of how this system would work has not been provided by the county. Residents should be given the vote on this matter. [ Report Abuse ] "36813934"

Correct me if I'm wrong. Wasn't this all important vote that everyone refers to over a decade ago?? The geography of the county has changed an enormous amount since then. I agree, they should put it to a vote. I think all those in favor of dumpsters would be shocked. Wasn't a poll done on the County website? Wasn't it greatly in favor of curb side (my memory could be wrong on this). Obviously, the people that commented here don't live "on the way to" a dumpster site. I live in between two. Our roads are always littered with bags and other trash that have flown from people's trucks. Really- do you think people are going to be stopping on the side of the road to dig through your trash?? The company has also stated they would pick up extra trash on an occasional basis and if it was happening all the time you could purchase a second can. I am glad you are all in the situation where you can visit the dumps often, not everyone is. [ Report Abuse ] "36810207"

I understand that the Alabama company had the lowest bid. HOWEVER, our city council and county supervisors made a HUGE deal a little over a year ago about keeping our money here within the state. [ Report Abuse ] "36808664"

I say give it a chance...you know all of you are using a "comments section" to be "heard" about the issue. Were any of you at the meetings. I did not see anyone stand up at the meetings named Heather or DJ. Did you call Hitt and tell him how you feel or is he and the rest just suppose to magically know what you think? If you did nothing, as I suspect, to tell your supervisors how you feel then I don't see where you can get on here and complain about something you did nothing about. Instead of watching the faucet run...turn it off. I guess its easier to rant on here though. [ Report Abuse ] "36808249"

Funny how most of the comments are from Hitts area. Let's all remember how he did us come election day. He will not let us vote now but he cannot stop us on election day. Supervisors do your job let the people decide or pay the price come election day. [ Report Abuse ] "36806687"

The board went with an Alabama company because they were the lowest bidder. That's how it works. You get the best deal for your county. It happens every day. It's called the bidding process and is in place to protect you from political favors. [ Report Abuse ] "36803894"

I'm all for the dumpsters if...............they would do something about the broken glass and nails that have taken out two tires on my truck last year, not to mention the shady-looking-dumpster-diving people always hanging around. I work out of town sometimes and I don't like the idea of my wife going to the dumpsters by herself!!!!! [ Report Abuse ] "36803222"

IF MISSISSIPPI IS SUPPOSE TO BE RUNNING OUT OF MONEY, THEN WHY IN THE HECK ARE WE GOING TO BE PAYING ALABAMA FOR OUR TRASH PICK UP?? So far, everyone that has left a Comment on this SUBJECT all have the same OPINION.. I HOPE TO GOD that Hitt and the rest of them will read this and see how the PUBLIC really Feel. Voter has a REALLY DANG GOOD POINT.. At Election time, WE THE PEOPLE NEED TO SHOW THE ONES IN OFFICE WHO PUT THEM THERE AND WE CAN TAKE IT AWAY, IF WE ALL STICK TOGETHER..THATS WHAT "WE" HAVE TO DO AS "THE PEOPLE"... My Wife and I agree with everyone else on the page about THE GARBAGE PICK UP.. I know I really dont won't anyone going through my trash in my yard, if that does happen, then what are WE Suppose to do?? I mean is that going to be Trespassing or What? Then Like Ed Said, I'm sure the County will come clean all OUR YARDS when an animal or bad weather puts trash all over the place, SURE WE WILL SEE THAT!!! [ Report Abuse ] "36802482"

One more thing... WHY IN THE WORLD are we going to accept a bid from a company in Alabama when we should be supporting MISSISSIPPI businesses. If the supervisors are going to ignore us and force us to have curb side pick up... then at least we could pump the money into our own state instead of someone elses. I am aware that the chosen bid was the lowest, but I would rather spend and extra couple of bucks each month so that the jobs kept HERE! Like I said in my previous post, I am NOT a fan of curb side garbage pick up. KEEP THE GREEN BOXES [ Report Abuse ] "36800417"

I have two small children, and that means a lot of DIRTY DIAPERS. Currently, I have to take the garbage off at least 3 times per week. I would MUCH rather have the green boxes. I DO NOT want our garbage and diapers to collect for 7 days before it's picked up at the end of my driveway. At this time our area of Lauderdale county has clean roads, and minimal litter. I can only imagine what our roads and yards will look like once we have garbage piled up in our driveways. You will never convince me that a trash can, or containment box will keep animals and looters out of it. There are already big enough problems with "dumpster divers" as it is... The LAST thing I want to worry about is someone snooping and digging through what I throw out while I am sleeping or at work. I think our "supervisors" will do what they want regardless of what the residents say... That is usually how it goes... Just look at the past. [ Report Abuse ] "36799397"

I dont want the Curb side pick-up, because of the fact, that I Take Trash 2 to 3 times a week. I have two Kids, 5 and 2 years of age, so I will want my Trash picked up more than once a week. Also, my Sister has Curb Side Pick Up in Clarke County and she said that after Christmas, they had 7 Bags of Trash. Well what are suppose to do, keep Trash in our house till time to put it out?? Our Supervisors really dont use there Heads and think about the Whole Situation and what the People are suppose to do when they have there Cans filled up and Garbage over flowing in there Yards... Then Animals will be in the Trash and then the People are goin to have to Build the Boxes out by the street and THE SUPERVISORS haven't talked about that on the News where the PUBLIC Can Hear.. I DONT AGREE WITH IT AND I DONT WANT IT.. THE SUPERVISORS WON'T LET ALL OF THE PEOPLE VOTE BECAUSE THEY KNOW WHAT THE OUT COME WILL BE, SO THEY USE THERE POLITICAL P0WER AND DO THINGS OWN THERE OWN.. I am totally opposed to the curb pickup. The dumpsters work way better than what the board of supervisors is forcing on us. You are going to see trash overflowing (small capacity can't handle an unexpected yet predictable occasional increase-what are you going to do then?), horrible smells (in your yard) attracting varmints and worst of all people who don't pay to have pickup will just dump theirs on your property. This is all predictable. I will expect the county to come clean it up. I am so sure they will. [ Report Abuse ] "36799257"

Kathleen is correct the people have voted on this issue with a no to curb side pickup. However Hitt and the other two will not let it come to a vote out of fear it will be voted down. Hitt and the others do not care what Kathleen and others have to say. We all need to remember this at election time. They were put in office to represent the people not be dictators. I thought we live in a democracy, I guess in Lauderdale County that is not true. As mentioned in the news cast Hitt has had this personal agenda for ten years. I guess if you persist long enough you can get your way no matter what the people have to say. I am against curb side because one day a week is not sufficient. However if the majority is in favor then likewise I would go along with it. However I fought for my country for the right of the people having a say in their government. The people are not represented when the Supervisors do not listen to the people. We as residents/voters need to clean house come election day. [ Report Abuse ] "36798857"

The only problem I see is that I will need more than one garbage dispenser. We take our garbage off to the green dumpsters more than once a week. Other than that, my family seems to be fine with it. $9.10 a month times 12 months = $109.20 which is a little more than the $100 that we are already paying. Guess since they voted for it, we have to deal with it. [ Report Abuse ] "36794519"

I CAN'T BELIEVE WE MIGHT GO TO CURBSIDE PICK-UP. I WAS SURE WE VOTED TO KEEP THE GREEN BOXES. OUR SUPERVISORS ARE NOT LISTENING. WHY WOULD WE WANT TO PUT OUR GARBAGE OUT FOR THE CRITTERS TO STROW DOWN OUR CLEAN ROADS?????? WITH ADDED EXPENSES TO US.. [ Report Abuse ] |

Post 1: People wake up: Yes the dumpsters are an eyesore. So will the country roads when you see blue trash cans lining the roads for miles as you drive, and that will be spread out over the whole county as different districts/areas will be picked up on different days. This is another attempt by elected officials to push something down our collective throats. We the people have continually stated in voting that we did not want roadside pick up in the county by the majority. There were solutions to the problems. They just did not look at them all. Quote from Sup. Boswell who foresees problems with the curbside pick-up system: "I think it'll be very expensive down the road," he said. "I think we'll get a very good bid on it to start. I think once we get rid of our garbage trucks, our green boxes, and our employees, I think (the garbage company will raise their rates) extremely high." Continued on post 2

what will happen when the residents that DONT want curbside pick up, just don't pay garbage fees--and instead burn their trash. Then the price that we were quoted will be increased substantially to make up for those houses where garbage isn't collected.

I've said it once and I'll say it again. The price for this service will make a big jump after it is approved. Just as the boxes have jumped from 60 to 100 dollars, this service will double within 2 to 3 years.

Someone mentioned the handicapped and elderly. So what about the disabled or elderly who can't drive? If they can't drive, how do they get their trash to a dump? What about the single mothers, widows, husbands who work off or at war? Who is helping them with their "old challenge"? My trash sits at my house all week, b/c I am scared enough to visit the dumpsters during daylight hours, much less at dark (which is still around 5 pm). I guess I could get myself and children up 30 minutes earlier so we could stop by a dump on the way to school and work.... There are also people saying lots of questions haven't been addressed by the sups ( ex. will there still be a landfill?) Maybe you need to read a little more, b/c most of the questions that are being asking on here HAVE been addressed. The cans will be 95 GALLONS!! If you think you will need 3 cans w/ weekly pickup, then you have a bigger problem than the sups could ever cause. That is 285 gallons of trash!
Out of the 82 counties in this state, Lauderdale is the only one that only has green boxes. Do you really think we have it figured out while the rest of the state doesnt? You walk to your mailbox so take your trash on the way, or put the trash can in the same vehicle you use to take it to the boxes in. Your worried about people digging through your trash? dumpster divers already do. Trash on roads? Already there! This is not only Hitts work, there are 2 others. Children do not complain as badly as the sad people in this county. This county is an embarrassment and has major issues that need attention and all yall can focus on is green boxes, its just sad
[ Report Abuse ]
Here is a thought to ponder, if doing the job in house is driving the price into the red, and if contracting with a private vendor for curbside pickup is cheaper seems only logical that having a private vendor pick up our current dumpster system would save even more tax dollars.(IE less miles driven by trucks and no expense of containers for each home. Why was this option not investigated? If it was investigated why has it not been shared with the tax paying citizens?

I am EXTREMELY disappointed (again) in our Lauderdale County Supervisors. The only possible reason I can imagine them not wanting to hold a vote and allowing we citizens to decide how to handle our garbage is because they don't care what we want (or someone has already made a backdoor deal). Do the supervisors understand that there are families that produce too much garbage for a once a week pick-up? Do they not see a problem with the fact that they are asking us to place our trash outside where (amazingly) we don't have a leash law and it can be strewn everywhere? Tell ya what, supervisors - when that happens at my house, I'll be calling you to come help pick it up. Those who make the decisions, must deal with the consequences.
I have to agree with one of the previous posters on here. Exactly what are the elderly, and physically challenged residents supposed to do. In the area in which we live, half of the residents have extremely LONG driveways, and most of them are NOT paved. I really would like to know what the solution would be for these people to get their (large) garbage bins fully loaded with trash down and back up their driveways. Hopefully, we all have kind neighbors that can help out with this new challenge. On another note, I can assure you that our sheriff dept doesn't spend a whole lot of time worrying about "litterers". I, myself, called and reported one of the deputy's not too long ago for throwing a McDonalds bag, and cup out while I was driving behind him. So much for setting a good example.
I agree and disagree with many on here. I have to drive at least 5 miles to a green box. But, I,like many, take trash off more than once a week! There is NO WAY I can keep it around my house for a week at a time or even in my carport because of stray animals. I would have to have at least 3 big cans to put it in until trash day, THEN I have to take it down a steep driveway only to have to drag them back up again. I'm back and forth on the decision, but I do think it should be a voted decision, not just the supervisors. They aren't taking my trash off for me or picking it up. And too, what these trucks will do to our already in poor shape roads in my area! There is enough trash on the sides of the roads without more flying out. I used to live right down from Waste Management and they drive like idots and stuff flies out everywhere!!! And they leave the cans in the middle of the road or off in a ditch. REALLY? Maybe they need to be trained to not do that and I might agree with it!!
We also came from a county that had curb side pick up and I am astonished at the condition of these dumpsters and the people that WANT them! Yesterday there was a dead deer dumped there and over-flow of trash blowing everywhere! Curb side or dumpsters, we've got some terrible issues with IDIOTS throwing trash out along the roads, its not stray dogs! I never see strays in our area. Listen, put your trash in a decent can (or two) with a tight lid, on the day of pick up.There is no need to build an unsightly trash can box. Keep the sides of the street clean in your neighborhood. Be a good citizen and not a litter bug. Remember when some one sees your litter, they think its ok to litter too! BE BRAVE-and responsible-"Report a litterer to the Sheriff Dept" we all have cell phones- so use them! We are very much for the curb side and hope the respectable supervisors will vote that way too! We do believe the contract should be give to Mississippi business. Keep our money in our state!
Does anyone really believe that this will save the taxpayers money?? When has anything our stuporvisors touched saved us money. Our horse barn cost more than the one in Philadelphia and theirs is much nicer. Not to mention the Loblolly fiasco. I wonder how much of a payoff Hitt received for his vote.
What about the wear and tear on the roads. Who will pick up the garbage that blows out of the trucks? If you ride on ll/80 east to Russell look at all the garbage on the side of the road that blows out of the city garbage trucks... and the road it self is in terrible shape.
First of all,if I lived right next to a green box, (which I don't), I would probably want it moved to a place AWAY from my home! Is there not places (and I don't really know where)-- where I could take my trash WHENEVER I wanted to? AWAY from the public? People will soon begin filling up 50 gal. barrels and burning OR just throwing stuff in deep hollows around the county. I know this seems like a "step back in time"---BUT...it's what happens when Govt.FORCES the people to do so! I remember as a child seeing this while hunting or fishing. Trash will be thrown WHEREVER people can dispose of it! So..what's the solution? I really don't know but the WORST move the Supervisors can make is to take the decision AWAY from the people. I know ALL of these men personally, and I hope the best for ALL of them, but...doing away with the green boxes will be political SUICIDE for ALL who are for this one! Who CARES if Laud co. is the ONLY COUNTY in Ms. to have them? LET THE PEOPLE SPEAK!

I live in HITT's area, and I will make sure he knows that I'm not too happy with the issue here. He will be getting a Letter too about the whole issue. I have Family that lives outside of Lauderdale County and they really dont like the Curb Side Pickup, Especially when you have Young Children. Trash needs to be taking out more than just once a week.. Hitt and the rest of the Supervisors have not stated how many times it will be picked up. They do whatever they want anyways, because thats how this Country Works. We will have to live with there Decisions and thats it, I understand that and so does everyone else.
