Lauderdale County District 2 supervisor Jimmie Smith represents the Mississippi Association of Supervisors on the Juvenile Task Force Operations subcommittee. It met Friday at the Lauderdale County Juvenile Center.
"What we're trying to do is develop some general guidelines that will help enhance the safety and operation of juvenile centers across the state of Mississippi," said Smith. "The other thing I think that we're trying to do is make sure that we're using those resources that's already there so we're not using other tax dollars when we've got resources that can help enhance these juvenile centers across the state."
Glen Arnold, administrator of the Adams County Detention Center, sees a similar role for them.
"The purpose of this task force is to simply standardize the operation of all the facilities throughout the state to enhance the operation by the minimum guide lines that we set out," said Arnold.
Because health care is important in the operation of juvenile centers, the state health department assigned its own Dave Bender to the committee.
"If we can assist in any way, if there's an accident or if they're ill, to work with the Department of Health in their area to enhance the care of these inmates," said Bender.
The committee will come up with recommendations for the state legislature by Dec. 1 for consideration during the 2003 session.
