Groups Oppose Prescription Requirement
Jackson, Miss.
Some groups like stopmethnotmeds.com are not happy about recent legislation proposed to make the purchase of pseudoephedrine illegal without a prescription.

No one in any gov't health ministry/secretariat/dep't in any country all around the world will admit to the fact that phenylephrine simply DOES NOT WORK. It is TOTALLY USELESS! Millions of allergy sufferers all over the world are now having their symptoms wreak havoc with their lives because of a bunch of lowlife crystal meth makers/users. Speaking as someone who suffers from terrible seasonal allergies, I think the only answer is to make crystal meth manufacturing/usage convictions punishable by true LIFE sentences (or worse) and to put pseudoephedrine BACK into legitimate over-the-counter medications. Oh, and I'd just like to shout out a big Thank-You to all the street drug dealers/addicts in this world for making my spring and fall seasons a living nightmare! I hope your turf wars and addictions ____ you all, and sooner rather than later!

This is a ridiculous law! My husband lost his insurance so we cannot afford to go to the doctors to get a prescription for what is still and should be a legal medication. This will not stop meth dealers. Those people know how to work around everything. Only ones who will hurt are the uninsured. What next..... a script for vitamin C and chicken soup? This will cause a burden on an already over stressed health system and thus far for the seven years I have lived here the health service here in Mississippi is pathetic. This bill is unconstitutional. The United States needs to get on board with other governments and their stance on natural and preventative medicine. This is off topic but we are going to war on the wrong people here. When I had the flu and could not go to the doctors all I had was this type of over the counter medication. It was bad enough to be treated like criminal for even asking for one box. We need to start standing up because we are losing fast all of our freedoms!

What's biased about it? It presented both sides, information about a group opposing the bill, and why, and a pharmacist who supports the bill, and why. What more do you want?

Was it just me or did the article seem a little bias?

There are so many laws concerning so many aspects of our lives. I understand that laws are needed, but this is ridiculous! I wonder how many people that are arrested for gun related crimes actually have their gun registered? It's the law, so they should-right?? Same thing is going to happen here, the meth dealers will still find a way to get what they need. In the meantime, the rest of us will pay the price. I AM thinking and NO I don't support it. Sure the concept is great, but the HONEST people of MS will suffer, not the drug dealers.

Thanks Govt.! What about us self employed uninsured people? I can't afford to go to the doctor every time my sinus's act up. This is the south after all and we have major pollen problems. This will just over extend the medical system more.

E-tracking is only good if the ID isn't fake. Guess what: A lot of the time they are. There was a bust recently where a meth operation was broken up and one of things they were doing was making fake IDs so people could buy as much of these drugs as possible. Come on, think people. Support this bill!

The legislature is using Washington politics with this. Do something sensible and use e-tracking. Meth heads are too paranoid to purchase legally now. The don't want to be recorded buying pseudoephredrine. This will do nothing that the current law won't do except make it harder on law-abiding people to get an FDA approved over-the-counter cold medicine.

How much more backwoods can Mississippi get. We lead the nation in foolish laws. This would only make it harder for a law abiding citizens to get what they need. So I am being punished so the lawenforcement officers can have more time to ride around and do nothing. This will only rasie medical cost for everyone. Now people will have to get a presciption to get Nyquil!!!! and we think medicaid and the medicare system is broke now, just wait. Now I have to pay $100.00 to my doctor to get a $5.00 bottle of cold relief. Stupid lawmakers you do the math!!!

While I understand the problem, I do feel the change is a bad idea. Mississippi is one of the poorest states, so why increase cost to the public for a doctor's visit, just to get an over-the-counter medicine. Remember, these drugs are FDA approved and intended not to require a prescription. Let's require a prescription for alcohol while we're at it. It has and continues to do more harm.

The problem with this is, many people try to cure their problems before going to the doctor. If this takes affect then it will cost us more money to cure something we could have gotten over the counter.

I am not against this bill, my children have allergies and need these over counter meds, use e-tracking for illegal sales. Who in South MS doesn't have allergies, this is wrong.

I often see a number of 600 labs. Really, why not disclose that this is not a case of 600 meth cooks, but a dozen or so that cook small batches. Why not do a little bit of police work and arrest these people. The police have to be smarter than the meth-heads, and use existing technology, or develop intelligence driven investigations. They are not using existing laws requiring the reporting of PSE sales, and existing data-bases, such as Meth-Check, that has been in our state for some time now. Ask your local sheriff, or chief who are backing this bill if his agency is a member of Meth Check (the service is provided free to law enforcement)to monitor PSE Sales in his jurisdiction. I bet a Who-Dat T-Shirt, they don't know. But these lacklustre leaders will wring their hands and tell elected officials they need more money, they need more laws. The same leaders who look at meth cases as black-holes. They get nothing, they don't seize cars, property, or other assets, because they're just not there, or tainted with a haz-mat liabilities. So, there's nothing in it for them, other than doing the job we expect them to do. We get arrest numbers, but why are they silent on the number convicted?

Being unemployed and not having insurance it is very difficult to even go to the doctor when I need to. I can't afford to go to the doctor to get a prescription for over the counter medicine. I know of alot of people that are facing the same problem. Please don't put even more of a burden on us.
