Residents at Old Poplar Place Apartments are on edge. The community, known for its safe surroundings and long time residents, was shaken Thursday morning when one of those residents was discovered dead.

"The body of an 83-year-old woman was discovered this morning in her apartment by a neighbor," said Dean Harper, Meridian Police Department spokesman. "Depending on the results of the autopsy [we’ll] determine where we go with this case."

The neighbor who discovered the body said he hadn't heard from the woman since Tuesday. When he went to her apartment, he discovered the worst.

Police did not release the deceased woman's identity, pending notification of next of kin. Officials also did not comment on whether there were any signs of forced entry.

Police did say there is reason to believe the death was not from natural causes.

"It is suspicious because we have reason to believe this was not a natural death," Harper said.

Authorities expect autopsy results sometime Friday night and will make a final determination on the case Saturday.
