The Meridian School District's Teacher of the Year hails from the new ninth grade facility at Meridian High School.
Liz Garner Michael was first chosen by her peers as ninth grade teacher of the year. Then she was selected by a nominating committee to represent the district for state teacher of the year.
"All my life I wanted to teach, ever since I was in the 8th grade," said Michael. "So it's a dream come true and a dream realized. And I feel very blessed to have been able to realize my dream. I have been teaching for 29 years. And it's a love. I've always wanted to teach English as long as I can remember."
Michael said it's nice to be recognized for doing something that she loves. She says any of her colleagues at MHS ninth grade would have been great choices for teacher of the year.

Mrs. Michael, I am so proud of you. I was one of your students in about 89 at Kate Griffin. I was one of those lost causes, but you made me feel smart. I am now the proud mother of 3 great children and a wonderful husband living in Seattle Wa. I graduated from MCC and served 4 years in the United States Army. I am now working at a prestigious Medical Practice and I owe it all to the people who believed in me especially you. I will never forget you. You are the greatest teacher hands down !!!
Mrs. Michael is one of the best English teachers ever! I am so happy she is my teacher.! Congrats Mrs. Michael!!!!!!!
Mrs. Michael has well deserved of this recognition. She is a great teacher. I rememeber taking her in the 9th grade at Kate Griffin over 15 years ago. She was a great example of how the Meridian Public School teachers used to be. And she didnt mind calling your parents if a student got out of line in her class; not that anyone got out of line...but she was very discipline as well. GREAT JOB MRS MICHAEL!!!
