Mississippi Public Safety Commissioner Stephen Simpson says his agency has cut the miles troopers can travel as part of an effort to save money.
The Mississippi Legislature cut the department's budget by 5 percent last year and executive cuts by Gov. Haley Barbour pushed it up to 9 percent, with another trim likely in the next several weeks.
Simpson said he expects the 2011 budget to be 9 percent smaller. He told The Hattiesburg American editorial board the department has taken various measures to cut costs, including reducing the number of miles each trooper travels monthly in his or her territory from 5,000 to 2,500.
That move will ease the wear and tear on the troopers' vehicles, but will reduce their patrols significantly.

Yay!! Now that they have cut their mileage in half, not only will they save the state money, but they will save me money on speeding tickets... hopefully.
Anonymous, you are right. And if they could get them back to the speed limit they enforce, they would get better gas mileage. In fact, most cops could do that one.
Working Mama. I would urge you to give those troopers a break today. A trooper in troop H lost his mother and had the funeral today. I don't think anyone anywhere would begrude them for using a car for that. In fact most processions are led by some type of law enforcement free of charge to anyone who requests it. Don't be so low.
