Lauderdale County has been paying whatever local hospitals billed for inmate healthcare.
Today Stan Neese of United Health Care proposed that the county let his company negotiate lower prices when inmates require treatment.
"So you're looking at 150 folds at $23 per month, so you're looking at $3,000 a month in administrative fees where we are looking at one claim of $15,000 that you're being charged; we may end up paying six or seven thousand dollars for that, so one claim can completely offset what you're paying us to administer the plan," Neese told the Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors today.
Hospitals would bill the negotiated prices to United Health Care. They would then be reimbursed by the county. The supervisors indicated they will adopt the plan.
