Gov. Haley Barbour named power company executive Tommye Dale Favre to head Mississippi's newly created Department of Employment Security.
Favre is the talent management supervisor for Mississippi Power Company, a Pascagoula-based utility with 1,250 employees.
Mississippi Power provides electricity to 193,000 customers in 23 counties.
Barbour pushed through legislation this year that requires the department head to report to him.
Favre will oversee job training at 75 state centers, track unemployment statistics and help employers find qualified Mississippi workers.
Barbour said Favre would take office Sept. 1, but that the organizational structure of the new department is still being worked out.
Jim Lott, formerly director of the Employment Training Division for the state Development Authority and interim director of the state Department of Employment Security over the last month, will remain with Favre as a deputy director.
Favre joined Mississippi Power in April 1988. She's a graduate of the University of Mississippi and holds masters degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi.
