The discovery was made around nine o'clock Friday morning in a wooded area, about a one-fourth of a mile off of Knox Road in Toomsuba. Clay Wheeler and his wife discovered the bones in a plastic bag while walking on family property.
"My wife saw something over there and you could see where somebody dug a hole and you could see some bones," said Wheeler. "We looked around in there and my wife said, 'Call the sheriff!"
"We know that sometimes in rural communities, people dispose of bodies. That's why we take any reports like this seriously until proven otherwise," said Major Ward Calhouse with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department.
Investigators have since determined that the remains were that of a dog. Meanwhile some questions still remain. Investigators say they are not sure why the bones were placed in a bag or how long they had been there.
