Local Red Cross volunteers and Mississippi Power head to Florida to assist in the cleanup of Hurricane Charley.

Several local Red Cross volunteers left Saturday morning in route to Florida to assist in the cleanup of Hurricane Charley. The category four storm was much more damaging than expected.

Meridian Red Cross officials say they need all the help they can get. If you would like to help hurricane victims you are asked to make a monetary donation online at www.redcross.org or you can make one in person at the Meridian Key Chapter.

Work crews from Mississippi Electric companies are in Florida as well to help restore power to areas battered by the hurricane. The storm knocked out power to 1.3 million homes and businesses as it crossed from southwest Florida to the Atlantic Coast.

Mississippi power has sent 45 crew members, 26 linemen with the rest as support personnel to the Tampa Electric Company. Several Gulf Coast power companies have also dispatched help.
