Newton County Sheriff Jackie Knight said Kenneth Savell, 71, of Decatur, was found dead in his home on Vincent Road at around 7:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Knight said it appears that Savell had been hit in the back of the head several times with a blunt object.

A shotgun, keys to a vehicle, and money were taken from the residence.

The death was reported to the sheriff by the victim's son.

"A neighbor died about a week ago, back up in the mill. Sunday night, we were coming back from the casino. I reached over and told him, ‘Dad, I love you and I don't want you to die.’ He said, ‘I'm not going to die.’ And he didn't die. Somebody murdered him," said Larry Savell.

"We called the Mississippi Crime Lab in. Mississippi Bureau of Investigation out of Meridian is assisting in the investigation," said Sheriff Knight. "At this time, all I can say is it is under investigation."

Any information related to this incident may be reported to the Newton County Sheriff's Department at (601)635-2101.
