Mississippi health officials reported another death from the mosquito-transmitted West Nile virus and two more human cases Wednesday.

The death occurred in Washington County. The new human cases were discovered in Hinds and Coahoma Counties.

This brings the state's total number of identified human cases of West Nile virus to 17 with three cases resulting in death.

This time last year, Mississippi reported 53 human cases of West Nile and one death.

In 2003, there were 83 human cases of the virus in Mississippi and two deaths.

State epidemiologist Dr. Mills McNeill said health officials are awaiting final test results from five other suspected human cases of West Nile in Madison, Hinds, Copiah, Greene and Panola Counties.
