Lizzie Hammett and Regina Green are the two latest Fayette residents to appear before a federal magistrate on charges related to the $150 million verdict in 1999 in Jefferson County. The suit was brought against the manufacturer of the diet drug fen-phen.
Ten Fayette residents appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge James C. Sumner Tuesday. All were released on their own recognizance after their appearance, including Hammett and Green.
The twelve are being charged with conspiracy to commit an offense against the United States and to defraud American Home Products, the maker of fen-phen.
Bob Garrity, the FBI special agent in charge, said the 12 allegedly obtained money by false pretenses. He said some had never taken fen-phen.
