Alabama Not Enforcing Consumer Health Protection

Gov. Robert Bentley says Alabama insurance regulators will not enforce consumer protection provisions of the federal health care overhaul pushed by President Barack Obama.

The Montgomery Advertiser reports Bentley recently wrote a letter to federal officials saying Washington, not state regulators in Montgomery, should be responsible for making sure insurance policies sold in Alabama comply with the federal law's requirements such as covering people with pre-existing health conditions.

Bentley, a physician, has rejected other portions of the health overhaul, such as setting up a state-run health exchange and expanding Alabama's Medicaid program to cover more low-income residents.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says Alabama is one of six states that have said they will reject the law's provisions.
