Alabama Releases New Failing Schools List

Montgomery, Ala. The Alabama Department of Education has announced the new list of failing public schools, where students may transfer to other non-failing public schools or to private schools.

In Sumter County, Kinterbish Junior High, North Sumter Junior High, and York West End Junior High were on the list. Other schools in west Alabama listed as failing included: John Essex High School and Marengo High School in Marengo County, and George P. Austin Junior High and Linden Elementary in Linden.

The department of education says five schools were added to the new list. They are Barbour County Intermediate School, Lafayette High School, Abbeville High School, Jeremiah A. Denton Middle School in Mobile County, and Bessemer Middle School.

Four schools dropped off the list: Samson Middle School, Brighton Middle School and Robinson Elementary School in Birmingham; and Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in Tuscaloosa.

Three schools came off the list because they closed: Center Street Middle School and Hill Elementary School in Birmingham and Tarrant Middle School.

The state does not release ranks or scores for non-failing schools.
