Archusa Accident Update

A Clarke County woman who was injured in a Saturday boating accident has been upgraded from critical to stable condition at a Jackson hospital.

Clarke County Sheriff Todd Kemp says Martha Brady was seriously injured on Archusa Lake around 9:30 Saturday morning when the boat she was traveling in struck something in the water, causing the engine to make its way into the boat while the propeller was still turning.

Kemp says while Brady's arm was nearly severed a result, doctors at UMC were thankfully able to save it. Sheriff Kemp tells Newscenter 11 that Brady will have to undergo several reconstructive surgeries in the future.

My heart goes out to the Brady family. I hope Mrs. Brady is able to heal and recover fully. My beautiful 10-year-old grandson, David Paul McFarlin, was the boy killed May 31, 2010, at Storm Lake, Iowa.

We posted a pretty extensive study of accidents of this nature (drive strikes submerged object and drive flips into boat) early this year. in response to a similar accident. Our coverage includes a list of similar accidents and links to further discussions of log strike testing and the history of how drive designers have tried to prevent accidents like this one. We wish her a speedy recovery, but recognize that recovering from these accidents is often challenging. Gary Polson Propeller Guard Information Center
