Gov. Phil Bryant has declared a state of emergency in Mississippi's Kemper and Noxubee counties.

A tornado Thursday killed one person and injured five in Kemper County, and damaged a number of buildings in Noxubee County before moving east into Alabama.

Storms also caused damage in Clay, Forrest, Jasper, Jones, Perry, Wayne and Stone counties, according to National Weather Service reports.

More than 9,000 people remained without power in Kemper and Noxubee counties Thursday evening, and officials say that because high-voltage transmission lines are down, some power might not be restored until Friday.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency has set up a command center to support local governments.

The same storm front dumped snow and ice in the Midwest and spawned tornadoes around St. Louis and elsewhere.
