Census Bureau Finds Highest Poverty Rate in Mississippi

A new report released Thursday from the U.S. Census Bureau shows Mississippi had the highest poverty rate and the lowest median income in the nation in 2012.

It shows the national median income was $51,324, meaning half of households earned less than that amount and half earned more.

Mississippi's median income in 2012 was $37,095. Maryland had the highest, at $71,122.

Mississippi had the highest poverty rate in the U.S. in 2012, at 24.2 percent. It was one of three states with an increase in the poverty rate from 2011 to 2012. The others were California and New Hampshire.
