Philadelphia, Miss. Almost a week after Kayzlyn Thomas found herself the victim of a hit-and-run, the three-year-old girl has died. Philadelphia police do have a suspect, but are not yet releasing a name. They say they'll now be focusing all their energies on finding their suspect.
"It's progressing," Chief Detective Fredesz Moore says. "It's not progressing as fast as we'd like it to. Our main concern was trying to make sure the child was okay. But after this morning, the child has passed, so we can focus all our attention on trying to locate the driver of the vehicle at this time. "
Kayzlyn had run out in front of her mother near game stop when the car struck her. Investigators say after Kayzlyn was hit, the driver got out but then quickly drove away. The individual was driving a dark SUV, possibly a Chevy Trailblazer. Police haven't released a description on the individual yet, but the family says the driver was a woman. And they're still hoping she'll turn herself in.
"If it was an accident, she shouldn't have run. She has conscience enough to come forward and just say what happened," says Kayzlyn's great aunt, Tarina McMillan.
After the accident, Kayzlyn was transported to Neshoba general hospital, ,then later transferred to UMC in Jackson, where she died from her injuries Wednesday morning.
"At this time we are sending the body to Jackson for an autopsy, and it'll be tomorrow afternoon before I know an official cause of death," Neshoba County Coroner Allen Collins says.
Family and investigators are asking anyone with any information on this case to please come forward.
