Citizens National Bank marked the occasion of 125 years in business by sharing a large cake with customers at the downtown Meridian location.
Officials say the bank got its start when the state legislature issued a handwritten charter to a small group of businessmen and farmers who raised $50,000.
It actually opened on the site of its current downtown location Mar. 6, 1888. the current building was constructed in 1967.
"It's really a special day for our bank," said president Archie McDonnell, Jr. "So many people that have come before us have put so much blood, sweat and tears and equity into building Citizens National Bank into what it is today. And we're so blessed to have so many employees that are continuing on in that tradition today."
Though Citizens National Bank is headquartered in Meridian, it has branches in Quitman, Philadelphia, Columbus, Macon, Carthage, Kosciusko, Southaven, Olive Branch, Madison, Flowood, Ridgeland, Laurel, Hattiesburg, and Waynesboro.
