Maj. Gen. Catherine Lutz
Jackson, Miss. The Mississippi National Guard Friday announced the death of the state's assistant adjutant general, Maj. Gen. Catherine Lutz, who had been battling cancer.
Lutz was also commander of the Mississippi Air National Guard. She directed Air National Guard operations and established policy to ensure mission readiness.
“Mississippi has lost a brave and accomplished soldier by the passing of Major General Cathy Lutz," said Gov. Phil Bryant. "General Lutz began her career as a flight nurse and went on to become the first female to earn the ranks of brigadier general and major general in the Mississippi National Guard. Deborah and I ask that Mississippians join us in praying for the Lutz family during this difficult time, and we ask God’s blessing on all military personnel and their families.“
Visitation will be held Sunday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Canton, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and from
9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Gluckstadt. the funeral will follow.
Internment will immediately follow the funeral at Canton Cemetery.

General Lutz was commissioned in the Mississippi Air
National Guard in 1982 as a Flight Nurse; and in 1987
she was re-commissioned as a Medical Service Corps
Officer. As a member of the Air National Guard, General
Lutz commanded three units: an Air Expeditionary
medical unit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, an aeromedical
evacuation squadron and a medical squadron. In 2004, she transferred to the Air Force Reserve Individual Mobilization Augmentee program after serving over 21 years in the Mississippi Air National Guard. During her Air Force Reserve tour she served as the Health Services Administrator to the 81st Medical Group at Keesler Air Force Base. In October 2005 she returned to the Air
National Guard as Special Assistant to the Mississippi Adjutant General. In March 2006, she was assigned as the Air National Guard Assistant to the 59th Medical Wing a
t Lackland Air Force Base. On 1 Dec 2008, she served
as the Air National Guard Assistant to the Chief Nurse of the Air Force at Bolling Air Force Base, Washington, District of Columbia. General Lutz was appointed to her
current position in December 2011.
