Dealing with Holiday Stress

The holidays are many people's favorite time of the year, but they can also be the most stressful time of the year.

In the rush of fighting the crowds, buying the gifts, racking up the debt and sending the cards, it all adds up to more than just the holiday spirit. And that's all before you throw family into the mix.

"Even good things can be stressful," according to David Mullins with Lincoln County Mental Health.

Mullins says for many people, tis the season to be stressed and for others depressed.

"If you don't happen to deal with stress or anxiety as well on a day to day basis, then sure holidays can be stressful and anxiety provoking," he points out.

With holiday stress just as much a tradition this time of year as the man in the red suit, Mullins says even debating the right wrapping paper can stress folks out. To manage those stressors, Mullins says find some time for yourself. While you're at it, identify stressors and don't create unrealistic expectations for yourself, like the perfect dinner.

"One thing you can do is ask are there specific things that you can identify that are very stressful for you or very anxiety provoking that you can simply avoid," Mullins suggests.

By avoiding those and maybe even some social settings, Mullins says it can all go a long way in mental health.
