ECCC Hosts Non-Traditional Conference

Decatur, Miss. East Central Community College invited female students to think outside the box in considering potential career fields.

ECCC hosted a Non-Traditional Gender Conference, highlighting programs that are open to all students but generally don't draw large interest from women.

A separate conference is held for male students to consider careers where females are more prevalent, such as nursing.

High school students from five counties who are involved in career and technical education were invited to see what East Central offers.

"They want to know how much money they can make; what are the possibilities of them getting a job?" said Amanda Walton, ECCC workforce education counselor. "And a lot of times, especially females that are going into these fields, are going to be manual labor. So they think, well, I can't do that. I can't lift the heavy objects, things like that. So we're here to show them, yes, you can do it."

Walton says the first requirement to be successful in fields like welding, auto mechanics, and carpentry is to want to learn and do the job.
