Jackson, Miss.

A Mississippi doctor's conviction for orchestrating a $6.9 million Medicaid and Medicare fraud scheme has been upheld by a federal appeals court panel in New Orleans.

Dr. Cassandra Thomas was convicted on 10 counts by a federal jury in Jackson in 2011. She was sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Her conviction was upheld Thursday by a three-judge panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Thomas was convicted of conspiracy, health care fraud, making false statements, theft of public money and wire fraud.

Prosecutors said Thomas, owner of Central Mississippi Physical Medicine Inc. in Jackson, Miss., was paid about $6.9 million in Medicaid and Medicare reimbursements from 2002 until 2005.

They said Thomas sent unlicensed and unqualified personnel into homes to give therapy sessions to patients.
