The Mississippi Democratic Party and the Hattiesburg City Council have asked the Justice Department to send observers to the city for the Sept. 24 mayoral election.
The Democratic Party sent a request to the Justice Department last month. The Hattiesburg City Council last month adopted a resolution also asking for poll watchers.
Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree's 37-vote victory in June over former City Councilman Dave Ware was challenged in court and eventually led to the second election.
DuPree told the Hattiesburg American that he also asked observers be present.
Polls will open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.
The new election was called by Judge William Coleman after a mistrial was declared in a suit brought by Ware, challenging the outcome.
