Meridian, Miss. The Meridian Fire Department was busy early Sunday at it responded to a house fire on Druid Lane in the Druid Hills community.

The fire occurred around 4:30 in the morning. When firefighters arrived, they were able to quickly confine the fire to only a couple of rooms.

Jason Collier, Meridian Fire Marshal, says, "The fire itself was contained to a couple of rooms. There was a lot of heat, smoke and water damage throughout. One firefighter suffered very minor injuries, and everyone else made it out without any injuries."

Although there have been a few fires this summer, Collier says fires are usually down this time of the year.

"The accidental fires of heating and space heaters is usually down this time of year, but as the cooler temperatures start coming back around, they will start to go back up," Collier says.

Even with fewer fires, it doesn't make their job any easier when you factor in heat.

"Fires are five times harder to fight in the heat, so you make up for it if you have 1 or 2 big ones," according to Collier.

The types of fires and the causes of them are different during the summer months as well.

Collier says, "Brush fires. People tend to stay up later at night during the summer, sometimes candles, sometimes smoking. Cooking fires are still the number one cause of house fires."
