Historic COFO Building Torn Down

Meridian, Miss. Meridian's historic Council of Federated Organizations building has been demolished.

Newscenter 11 was there as crews tore the building down on Saturday afternoon. The COFO building was formerly known as the Fielder and Brooks Drug Store. It was a gathering site for numerous Civil Rights organizations in the 1960s.

The director of community development for the city of Meridian told Newscenter 11 back in January that a structural engineer found that the building could not be saved.

Local Civil Rights icon Roscoe Jones has strongly opposed the idea of demolishing the building because of its historical significance.

The owner of the building, Judge Veldore Young, has no comment on the building being torn down.
