Lauderdale County, Miss. A burglary suspect was arrested, after he and another person were allegedly part of a violent confrontation with a homeowner Wednesday morning.
There were some tense moments inside a home on Russell Mount Gilead Road after the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department says two men came face to face with the homeowner while burglarizing the home. At least one shot was possibly fired, but it's unknown if anyone was hit.
One suspect was taken into custody after a search in the woods. A second suspect was not immediately apprehended. A third possible suspect was taken to the hospital, where she apparently escaped.
"It's just too early in the investigation to make any clear determination," said Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun. "We do know the homeowner was in a struggle with the two individuals. We believe there was at least one gunshot. That's still all being investigated to determine exactly what happened to whom."
Calhoun says the suspects ended up running into the woods, but authorities quickly set up a perimeter and brought in a K-9 unit.
"During the course of the search, one black male was located in the woods. He has been taken into custody," Calhoun said. "We are currently searching for the second black male."
Newscenter 11 saw investigators place a gun in an evidence bag while searching the woods. It's unclear if this is the gun actually used during the burglary. Calhoun says masks and clothing were also recovered.
During this ordeal, Calhoun says deputies found a partially dressed woman on a nearby street. She was taken to a local hospital, where she later fled on foot. Investigators were actively searching for her Wednesday but could only describe her as a person of interest. They say she is not considered a threat.
