Lauderdale County, Miss. A Lauderdale County man died early Tuesday morning after a confrontation with sheriff's deputies. Two deputies were injured in the altercation.
Authorities say 40-year-old Steven Gene Davenport died after the incident as deputies tried to arrest him for being involved in a fight with another man.
Sheriff Billy Sollie says deputies got a call about 3 a.m. that two men were fighting on Old Highway 19 Southeast. He says Davenport became violent when deputies tried to arrest him. Two more deputies were called in to help. Sheriff Sollie says no weapons were used except a stun gun, which was used unsuccessfully.
"The individual was placed in restraints. The individual became unresponsive," said Sollie. "Metro Ambulance was contacted, and he was transported to a local hospital where treatment was rendered. But he passed away at a local hospital."
Davenport's mother says she knew her son had a long history with drugs and had worried he would end up hurt one day. She says she's not angry with law enforcement. She just wants answers.
"I said, my son's dead. I just felt it, you know. I knew something was wrong," said Agnes Westmorland.
The deputies were wearing body cameras during the incident. Sheriff Sollie says one camera suffered damage during the scuffle, but video from the other will be sent to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation as evidence.
Davenport's body has been sent to Jackson for an autopsy.
