Local Properties Up for Bid

Meridian and Lauderdale County residents interested in bidding on the more than 150 tax forfeited properties across Meridian and Lauderdale County will get a chance to do so.

Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann says our area is only the second one in the state to be offered this opportunity. This is part of an effort to place certain properties back on the city and county tax rolls.

"We will be accepting just about any reasonable bid on these properties," Hosemann says. "So, all they have to do is mail their bid in and we're going to accept those. So, we expect some very good deals for individuals."

The list of vacant properties, as well as pictures, can be found by going to the city of Meridian's website. A link is provided below.

Hosemann says there are 42 properties available in the county and 117 in the city limits. Hosemann stresses that none of the money collected will go to Jackson.

"Every dollar of this goes back to the city office, municipal office, and the county," he points out. "To pay delinquent taxes."

All of this was made by possible by a partnership between local and state officials. Meridian Mayor Cheri Barry tells Newscenter 11 it's something that's been in the works for more than a year now.

"We hope that we're going to have a hundred percent sell through and sell 117 properties and move on to the next hundred in the next two or three months," Barry says.

Hosemann says the pilot project is one that could continue in the future, based on the success of the current project. He tells Newscenter 11 the best advice is to place your bid by the 12 noon deadline on March 21st.

Bids should be mailed to the following address:
