Some Meridian residents are helping the victims of the Tuscaloosa tornado this weekend.
Rebekah Dearmon of Meridian and several others collected donations, and brought them to Five Points Baptist Church just outside of Tuscaloosa in Northport, Alabama.
Dearmon says she got the idea when she learned of a group of Auburn alumni offering aid to tornado victims in the area.
Other student groups have pledged support to Tuscaloosa, including students at Mississippi State, LSU, South Carolina, and even Penn State.

Beginning at 7am each day, you can go to TDOT @ 1000 28th Ave or St. Matthias Episcopal Church @ 2310 Skyland Blvd E in Tuscaloosa to volunteer. They will send you out to areas in need. Several area restaurants have set up mobile kitchens with free food for survivors and anyone helping with the clean-up. You'll need a work pass to get past certain checkpoints in the city so it's best to report to these main volunteer hubs. You can also listen to 94.1 WZBQ. They have been doing and outstanding job on the air from 8am - 10pm each day taking calls and helping direct volunteer efforts to areas of need. There is currently a curfew for the tornado damaged areas in effect from 8pm - 6am, but the mayor said yesterday that should be lifted in a couple of days. I know there are several other areas around here that need assistance, but hopefully you'll find this information useful if you choose to assist in Tuscaloosa.
