Meridian's city council passed a $1.2 million bond issue for the city's water system Tuesday night. The funds will provide for much-needed upgrades in the city.
Public Works Director Monty Jackson says one project will be making essential improvements to the B Street plant that was built back in 1958. Also, the city plans to add more capacity to its wastewater treatment system.
Jackson pointed out a new generator at the North water plant will ensure clean water for the city's residents won't be compromised, as it almost was during Hurricane Katrina.
"This generator would allow us to operate the plant completely, and provide water continuously without any kind of electrical interruption," Jackson said.
Jackson says design work must be completed, but he estimates the projects to be underway within a year.
