Meridian, Miss. Meridian Housing Authority has presented college scholarships to ten of its residents who are graduating this year from Meridian High School.
The authority says it's able to offer the college assistance through grants it receives that have an educational component. The scholarships of up to $1500 may be applied to the student's college of choice.
"It's very important that we have a positive impact on these young people. Education, of course, is a very central and important factor in each of their lives," said MHA executive director Ronald Turner. "And we want to do what we can do to kind of help to make sure that they are going to be able to be successful citizens."
Turner says the process involves a lot of paperwork on the part of each applicant, to make sure they meet the qualifications. But he says it's worth it to help students get started on their next step in life.
