The Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department is investigating the death of a man found on the side of Burrage Road Monday morning.
A passerby reported seeing the man about 9:45 a.m.
Officials say it appeared 34-year-old Antonio Dewayne Amerson had been shot shortly before the time he was discovered.
"It's obvious that whoever did this drove to this remote area here to eliminate any eyewitnesses," said Sheriff Billy Sollie. "We've shared the information concerning the victim with the meridian police department to see if any of their investigators have any known ties with this individual."
Sollie said the area was canvassed for any possible forensic evidence and clues.
The body has been sent to Jackson for an autopsy.
Anyone with information about this case is asked to call Crimestoppers at 601-485-1860.
