A Marengo County commissioner and his son are free on bond after they were arrested earlier this week on five counts of first degree theft of property.
Commissioner Fred Armstead and his son, Fred Armstead, Jr., have been charged after a two-year investigation by the Marengo County Sheriff's Department. The two are alleged to have taken five cars from the county impound and sold them as scrap metal.
A check for the sale of the cars was made out to the sheriff's office, which officials there say they are holding as evidence.
However, the sheriff's department says the cars had nothing to do with the commission, and were not Armstead's to take.
