Meridian, Miss. Meridian Community College Friday recognized its Humanities Professor of the Year, Kelly McKee.

McKee gave a moving presentation about community and what it means to all of us to be a part of one.

"My speech is mainly on the concept of community and how we all work together, and how everyone wants to feel a part of something," said McKee. "No one wants to feel invisible and everybody wants to feel like he or she belongs to a community of people. It's just such an honor to be recognized by my colleagues in this way, and I just feel blessed and fortunate to be this year's recipient."

"It's something that shows that he or she has gained the respect of their colleagues here at the college," said Barbara Jones, vice-president of operations.

A member of the Mississippi Humanities Council was present and expressed the importance of humanities and the importance of professors like McKee.

"Humanities is for everyone. It's so important for us to remember our history, to pay attention to the arts, and to bring about a better quality of life through these classes," said Betty Lou Jones.

Kelly has been an instructor at MCC for 14 years.
