The local chapter of the NAACP hosted its annual banquet in the Queen City on Saturday evening.
The banquet took place at the Council of Organizations building. The Meridian / Lauderdale County NAACP took time to honor women who were instrumental in the Civil Rights Movement.
The NAACP also recognized its Man and Woman of the Year. We spoke to the Woman of the Year, Bettye Hearns, who told us the award means a lot to her.
"It means where I have worked and whatever I have done," Hearns said. "Somebody took notice. I usually work with young people, that's where my emphasis is. I work with young people trying to encourage them to be all that they can be."
This year's Man of the Year award went to Meridian City Councilman Jesse Palmer, Sr.
