Meridian Naval Air Station remembered Dr. martin Luther King, Jr. with a special service Friday. NAS will be closed for the holiday, Monday, Jan. 21.
The commemorative service acknowledged Dr. King's contributions to the nation in pushing forward civil rights for minorities.
Guest speaker, Lt/ Leon Leflore encouraged others to 'remember, celebrate and act' on King's non-violent ideals.
Leflore said King's influence has greatly influenced his career:
"It's because of him that I have the opportunities that I have today," said Leflore. "Those folks who have laid down for us in our paths have now brought us to where we are here today, and in our future."
Leflore is a native of Crystal Springs. He's a highly decorated officer who has served in the Pentagon, as well as in support of operations Southern Watch and Desert Fox. He now serves as the administrator for NAS Meridian.
