Meridian, Mississippi Meridian and Lauderdale County Tourism is set to unveil a new civil rights trail in Meridian on June 17th.
The event will begin at 8 in the morning with a breakfast at the MSU Riley Center, and people can then walk to Meridian's historic African American Business District for the unveiling of the trail around 9:30 a.m. It consists of eighteen trail markers in and around Meridian that showcase the city's civil rights history.
"Freedom Summer workers that were here tell a different story. They'll talk about how Meridian and Mississippi was brave, and not only did they change themselves, they changed the world. There's a lot of interest in that," said Dede Mogollon, executive director of Meridian and Lauderdale County Tourism.
This event will be one of the first activities to kick off the 50th anniversary of Freedom Summer '64 here in Meridian.
