Poplar Springs Nursing Center is observing National Nursing Home Week.
Residents and staff enjoyed a picnic Tuesday at Bonita Lakes.
Patients were able to enjoy fresh air, games and even a little fishing.
Activities director, Taunisha Williams, says residents benefit from a change of scenery and a break in their routines.
"We come out very often. We go out every month. We go to different places," said Williams. "We go to the casino and Wal-Mart and lunch and everything like this. But we wanted to do something with our families so we had a friends and family day."
The theme for National Nursing Home Week is 'Team Care'.
According to the Census Bureau, about 4 percent of the U.S. population lives in nursing homes.
