Meridian, Mississippi The United Way of East Mississippi hosted its second annual "Power of the Purse" event to help raise money for the Imagination Library program.
People had the opportunity to bid on items in both silent and a live auctions. All the proceeds from Thursday's event goes to provide children free books in Lauderdale, Clarke, and Kemper counties. The event helps promote children's literacy. Kids up to five years old receive one book a month. The event grew substantially from last year with a lot of hard work put in by volunteers.
"It's really paid off. It's going to be such a success, and we're so glad that we can allow or extend this to more kids, so that's what it's all about: just increasing literacy for the youth, and this is a great way that we've done this," said Christina Hawkins, the event chair.
A women's leadership award was also presented to Elisa Mayo who coordinates the Clarke County Imagination Library program.
