Public Housing Residents Studying Homeownership

The mission of public housing has changed, according to the executive director of the Meridian Housing Authority.

That is because the organization is now working to teach public housing residents to become homeowners. More than 40 residents are currently taking budget courses to help with the transition.

"Some of the clients that we deal with have problems with credit repair," MHA Executive Director Ron Turner says. "And through our home ownership program, we are helping them to solve some of those sort of things, so that they will be qualified and fully ready to transition into home ownership."

Turner says the program has created 35 new homeowners so far, something he is very pleased about. On top of that, Meridian is one of the largest housing authorities in the state of Mississippi.

Turner says public housing was established back in 1939.
